Getting Here

Getting here by by air: Costa Rica has two airports: Liberia (LIR) and San Jose (SJO). Liberia is about an hour drive away from Playa Grande Surf Camp, and San Jose is about a 5 hour drive away from Playa Grande Surf Camp. While Liberia is more convenient to fly into in terms of travel time, San Jose is often more budget-friendly.

Getting Here from San Jose: Once you land in San Jose, you have four options for how to get to the surf camp:

Inexpensive privately-owned bus and taxicab services are also available throughout Costa Rica. A good system of mostly-paved highways serves most of Costa Rica and its popular tourist areas. Playa Grande is about 290 km from the Costa Rica’s capital San Jose.

  1. Domestic Flight: Take a domestic flight with Sansa or Nature Air to the Tamarindo airport, which takes about one hour. From Tamarindo, you can then take a taxi to Playa Grande Surf Camp. (Flight prices vary)
  2. Private Shuttle: We can arrange for a private shuttle to pick you up at the airport and drive you directly to Playa Grande Surf Camp. (Apx. $200 one way)
  3. Shuttle: You can take the Grayline bus from San Jose to Huacas (on the way to Tamarindo). From Huacas, you can then take a taxi to Playa Grande Surf Camp. (apx $35/person + taxi, one way)
  4. Public Bus: You can take the public bus from San Jose to Huacas (on the way to Tamarindo). From Huacas, you can then take a taxi to Playa Grande Surf Camp. (apx $8/person +taxi, one way)

If you need to spend the night in San Jose, we recommend Mi Casa Hostel. It’s safe, clean, and very comfortable

Getting Here from Liberia: We can arrange for a shuttle will pick you up at the airport and bring you directly to the camp for $24 person (2 person minimum).

Getting Here from Tamarindo: If you arrive in Tamarindo before 4:00 PM, you can take a water taxi to Playa Grande. Go to the boat house in Tamarindo, and ask the boat driver to take you to Hotel Bula Bula ($3/person, 2 person minimum). From Hotel Bula Bula, the surf camp is about a 10 minute walk; just follow signs for "PGSC."

If you arrive in Tamarindo after 4:00 PM, you will have to take a taxi for apx. $30. Tell the driver to take you to Playa Grande Surf Camp in Palm Beach Estates, Playa Grande. It is near Hotel Bula Bula and Hotel Manglar. Once in Palm Beach Estates, follow signs for “PGSC” and “Hotel Manglar.” We are located right next to the Hotel Manglar, and there is a blue sign outside that says “Playa Grande Surf Camp” in white writing.

You may have better sources - if you do drop us a note, we'll add it to this list. The list of airlines is still helpful:

  • Continental Airlines - Continental has service from most major cities in the US.
  • Copa - Copa is the Panamanian airline.
  • Iberia - Iberia has service from major gateway cities in the US.
  • KLM - KLM has service from major gateway cities in the US.
  • Mexicana - Mexicana has service from major gateway cities in the US and Mexico.
  • Lacsa - Lacsa is the oldest national airline. It has inaugurated flights to Liberia from Miami.
  • Sasha - Sahsa is the Salvadorean airline. It has service from gateway cities in the US.
  • Sam - Sam has service from gateway cities in the US.
  • Taca - Taca has service from gateway cities in the US.
  • Varig - Varig has service from gateway cities in the US.

Getting Here

Charter Flights Charter flights throughout Costa Rica is available with prior arrangements sheduled ahead of time. Contact the carrier to make neccessary arrangements.
